Next Steps, Where is Cpt. John at Now?

Hello Everyone!

This has been an amazing experience so far! This Genius Hour Project has allowed me to establish a goal setting system and schedule for my boat restoration, and it has showed me how to document and share my experiences publicly using so many different apps that I have never experimented with before! As a final post to wrap up this portion of the restoration (The Genius Hour Project), I present to you the next steps for the restoration.

The next step for me is learning about fiberglass and how to apply it properly to old wood. I have already done some research during this project (thanks to Xyla, Andy and Lou), but I want to consult a few more sources on the behaviours of fiberglass and epoxy in order to avoid as many mistakes with this process as possible (once epoxy cures, it does not want to come off...EVER).

Now that I have successfully attached two new pieces of laminated strips of clear cedar, I have the confidence to attach the curved laminated piece that I have roughly shaped and hidden because I am absolutely intimidated by it and the process needed to fasten it onto the boat.

After all of the new pieces are attached, the next step will be sanding the entire boat to smooth the surface completely since the scraping of the old varnish has left a rough and dusty surface that would not be good to lay a new coat of varnish over it. Once the entire boat is sanded, I will then apply fiberglass to the back interior in order to strengthen the rear of the boat, and seal the small holes that have caused leaks in the past.

Until next time,

Cpt. John signing off (still not a real captain)
